Q: What funding is available for postgraduate students?
A: Postgraduate funding varies depending on your course and where you live. Many taught postgraduates are eligible for SAAS postgraduate loans (fees + living cost loan), while research students may be funded through studentships, scholarships, or grants. HISA can help you explore your options and guide you through the application process.
Q: Can I get help if I’m struggling financially during my course?
A: Yes. You may be eligible for discretionary or hardship funds through UHI. Contact the HISA Advice Service or your local student finance office for assistance

A: If you're experiencing issues with supervision, we recommend speaking to your programme coordinator or postgraduate tutor in the first instance. HISA Advice can support you in raising concerns formally and understanding your rights.
Q: Can I take a break from my studies?
A: Yes, you can request a temporary suspension or interruption of studies due to personal, health, or other reasons. We can help you with the process.
Q: Postgraduate study feels overwhelming. Where can I get help?
A: You're not alone; many postgraduates feel this way. HISA can connect you to counselling, mental health support, and wellbeing resources. We can also help you communicate with your department if your well-being is affecting your studies.
Q: Can international students work while studying?
A: Typically up to 20 hours per week during term. Rules vary — we can connect you with the right guidance.
Q: What support is available for my next steps?
A: UHI’s Careers Service offers guidance on CVs, job applications, PhD routes, and more. HISA can also signpost you to career events and funding for conferences or training that boost employability.
